After forfeiting approximately $3 million worth of After forfeiting approximately $3 million worth of bitcoin to the Irish Criminal Assets Bureau, a cannabis dealer still has a stash of 6,000 bitcoins worth over $200 million at the current price. These coins are still inaccessible.

We’ve all been watching as bitcoin’s prices are seemingly on a rocketship to the moon. Business Insider reported that bitcoin had hit a new all-time high recently, with each coin valued at $41,000.

CNBC reported the number slightly higher at nearly $42,000, resulting in a 40 percent increase in 2021 alone.

While some of us have invested, others have shrugged at the thought of taking our cold hard cash and converting it into the promising cryptocurrency. But cannabis dealer Clifton Collins seems to have had the right thought process when it came to investing his illicit earnings.

Bitcoin.com reports that Collins forfeited bitcoins worth around $3 million as they were seized by Ireland’s Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB). However, Collins reportedly has another bitcoin stash, consenting to the first, smaller stash in Bray Circuit Court towards the end of December after the bureau told a judge it’d sold the cryptocurrency off.

A bit about Collins’ background in cannabis: He started cultivating cannabis full-time in 2005, renting properties throughout #Ireland to house his grow ops. This included a house in Galway.

Collins harvested, packaged, and sold his product in Dublin. But rather than tossing his earnings in a bank, he began investing in bitcoin in late 2011 and early 2012. It wasn’t until 2017 that he was arrested by police in Galway.

Upon his arrest, the police seized some of his bitcoin. He was also sentenced to five years in prison. The CAB would not allow Collins to keep his bitcoin due to the fact that the funds used to purchase the cryptocurrency were acquired through his criminal activities.

The CAB’s lawyers were ordered to confiscate the money from the sale of Collins’ 89 bitcoins in custody, as well as his cash and assets acquired from the profits of his cannabis grow operations.
#NewYork Governor Andrew #Cuomo reintroduced a mea #NewYork Governor Andrew #Cuomo reintroduced a measure to #legalize #recreationalcannabis in the state in an announcement on Twitter. Governor Cuomo’s latest proposal would fall under the state’s upcoming budget package, giving his office more control over regulation.

“I’m announcing a proposal to legalize cannabis and create an equitable adult-use cannabis program in NYS,” Cuomo tweeted on January 6. “This program will generate much-needed revenue, while allowing us to support those that have been most harmed by decades of failed cannabis #prohibition.”

The legislation would create a new Office of Cannabis Management,  making it in charge of the current medical cannabis program as well as a new regulation allowing all adults over 21 to legally purchase cannabis for recreational use.

“I think this should have been passed years ago,” Governor Cuomo said during a video briefing, as reported in The New York Times. “This is a year where we do need the funding and a lot of New Yorkers are struggling. This year will give us the momentum to get it over the goal line.”

#Connecticut #Gov. Ned Lamont renewed his push for #Connecticut #Gov. Ned Lamont renewed his push for adult-use #legalization during his State of the State address Jan. 6, announcing that it is a priority for the new legislative session, according to a Patch.com report.

Connecticut’s #2021 legislative session opened Jan. 6, and Lamont, a Democrat, kicks off the session with increased majorities in the House and Senate, which could increase his chances of passing an adult-use legalization bill, Patch.com reported.

Lamont outlined legalization as a priority in his 2020 State of the State address, as well, and worked alongside the chairmen of key legislative committees last year to draft comprehensive legislation that would have legalized #cannabis for adults 21 and older and supported social and criminal justice reform efforts.
Due to #pesticide contamination, the Oregon Liquor Due to #pesticide contamination, the Oregon Liquor Control Commission (#OLCC) has issued an immediate recall of cannabis products. The recall was triggered when it was reported to the OLCC on December 29, 2020, that an extract failed its pesticide test. An investigation into the OLCC traceability database revealed the contaminated cannabis was initially transferred into the state’s adult-use system by a medical cannabis grower — medical growers in #Oregon can sell up to 20 lbs of cannabis into the adult-use market each year — and then was mixed with other flower for extraction purposes and for products like pre-rolls.

According to an OLCC press release, Ecotest — whose laboratory license was revoked in September 2020 for a variety of violations — gave the hot batch the green light for sale in March 2020, allowing it to make its way into other products. However, none of the contaminated extract that failed tests in December made its way onto store shelves

According to a recent press release, the Presiden According to a recent press release, the Presidential Commission on #LawEnforcement and the Administration of Justice released a final report on law enforcement policies including drug #decriminalization.

The report argues that drug decriminalization—including cannabis decriminalization—removes important tools for law enforcement officers. For instance, #UnitedStates Attorney for the District of Vermont Christina E. Nolan was quoted as saying that drug decriminalization is a mistake. “When something is decriminalized, it takes a tool away from law enforcement, signals that the behavior is OK and will not have consequences, and logically will lead to more of the undesirable behavior,” Nolan wrote. “Decriminalization of drugs will lead to more use, more related crime, and more drain on law enforcement resources and morale.”

With #California’s licensed pot shops still stru With #California’s licensed pot shops still struggling to compete with the illicit market and facing the new challenges of #COVID-19, a state panel that advises regulators on cannabis sales recommended Wednesday that several restrictions be relaxed to give legal businesses a better shot.

The state Cannabis Advisory Committee recommended changes that included lifting the $5,000 limit on the amount of pot that can be carried by delivery vans, making it easier for small businesses to sell different products and eventually allowing food and beverages to be served in cannabis lounges. The panel included the proposals in its annual report, which it approved Wednesday.

“The state has faced unprecedented circumstances in 2020: the global COVID-19 pandemic and resulting recession, a record breaking #wildfire season, and the nationwide fight for racial justice and equality,” the 17-member panel said in the report.

California voters approved state licensing of growing, distributing and selling cannabis in 2016 when they approved #Proposition 64, but the legal market has not lived up to expectations.
#NewMexico’s medical cannabis advisory board on #NewMexico’s medical cannabis advisory board on Wednesday recommended allowing licensed producers to cultivate more plants amid patient complaints about the lack of variety and the high cost of products, the Associated Pressreports.

Under current rules, #licensedproducers can grow 1,750 plants.

Dr. Dominick Zurlo, director of the state’s medical cannabis program, argued that next year companies can request to cultivate another 500 plants each. He noted that previous plant increases have not brought prices down but could not explain why prices remain high. Zurlo said the state has enough supply for the 101,000-plus enrolled patients and that companies reported growing just over 30,000 plants as of Sept. 30, but they can grow a combined total of 51,000.

“At this current time, production is actually outstripping the sales. What we as a program and department would really like to see is prices reduced and I think the current production really is showing that those prices could have been reduced.” – Zurlo during the meeting via the AP

Ultra Health, one of New Mexico’s largest producers, has argued in public meetings and as part of court challenges that the Health Department plant limits are arbitrary.

Cannabusinesses in the state contend that the state’s fee structure adds to operating costs which keeps prices high.

The board also recommended that officials adopt changes to medical cannabis reciprocity rules – a hot-button issue in New Mexico where earlier this year lawmakers passed a bill to prohibit out-of-state-patients access to medical cannabis ID cards. Additionally, the board wants to close a loophole that allows New Mexicans to see a provider online and get medical cannabis authorization in another state.

During the meeting, the board also denied a petition to allow medical cannabis as a therapy for pets with seizure disorders.
